Cawarden has saved a set of double doors featuring Newcastle DJ, ‘Big’ Niall Mercer. The doors are much-loved by the local community and preserving them has ensured they will remain part of the North East local music scene for years to come.
The Cawarden site team safely removed the doors from the former Norris House on Crawhall Road in Newcastle City centre on Monday 22nd February.
Cawarden is currently on-site delivering the demolition and site clearance works. The site is occupied by a number of vacant properties which were once used as office accommodation.
Part of the Norris House building was a set of large double doors that were fitted within an old archway. After the DJ’s sad passing in 2017, the doors were painted with a larger than life portrait as a tribute to DJ Niall.
Jamie Buchan and Steve Davis from SSD Concerts based in the nearby Albion House took delivery of the doors last Monday and they are planning to reinstall them at a local music venue.
‘Big’ Niall Mercer was a legend in Newcastle and has remained so ever since. He had a big influence on one of SSD’s founders with whom he DJ’d around the city’s music venues.
I was contacted by several local residents to see if the doors featuring Niall could be saved from demolition. Once I heard about the story of Niall, it was of course my pleasure to safely organise for the doors to be removed and handed back to the community.”

Working on behalf of the developer, Cawarden’s work at the site will pave the way for new apartments to be constructed. The development is also planned to include shared communal and amenity spaces such as a gym, media room, dining room, outdoor landscaped courtyard and roof terrace.
