Public Realm Transformation – Honouring Local Mining Heritage.
We recently completed a significant public realm project in Swadlincote, Derbyshire for South Derbyshire District Council, transforming a section of Eureka Park to pay homage to the town’s rich mining history. This project holds special significance for our team, many of whom have deep local ties, making it a privilege to contribute to a space that resonates with the community.
Scope of Works and Heritage Integration
Our works were carefully designed to incorporate elements of the town’s industrial past while enhancing the public space for future generations.
- Excavation & Site Preparation – We cleared the site through excavation and the removal of vegetation and topsoil, setting the groundwork for a carefully designed public space that integrates historical elements.
- Bound Gravel Footways & Metal Edgings – We constructed new bound gravel footways, complete with metal edgings, to create accessible and well-defined pedestrian routes. These pathways guide visitors through a sequence of heritage-inspired features, including repurposed mining structures.
- Block Paving & Granite Edgings – High-quality block paving and granite edgings were installed to enhance durability and provide a striking contrast between modern finishes and historical elements.
- Concrete Works for Key Features – To support the site’s focal points, we completed concrete works for the 6m mosaic, timber-carved Pit Pony and Pit Boy statues, and steel pergolas repurposed from reclaimed mining arches. These structures stand as powerful reminders of the town’s mining heritage.
- Soft Landscaping Works – The final phase included soft landscaping, enhancing the space with greenery and planting to create a welcoming and visually engaging environment.
Community Impact
The new public space is designed as a peaceful space for reflection.
But this project is more than just a transformation of public space; it’s a tribute to the town’s industrial heritage and the generations who worked in the mines. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with South Derbyshire District Council and Armsons Barlow, following the success of previous collaborations in the area.
At Cawarden, we take pride in creating meaningful spaces that enhance local communities, and this project is a true testament to our commitment to giving back.
