Cawarden raises Hinckley’s former leisure centre to the ground to pave the way for regeneration opportunities.
The former Hinckley Leisure Centre had reached the end of its economic life. The building was due to become redundant and no longer required for the purpose for which it was constructed. A new sports and leisure facility was being constructed elsewhere in Hinckley.
Cawarden was employed by the Local Authority as the Principal Contractor to demolish the existing building and clear the site, to prepare it for future redevelopment opportunities.
After removing the asbestos and completing the soft strip, the main demolition began.
The leisure centre had two swimming pools and one diving pool, all of which needed to be broken out and removed, along with major sub-structures.
One of our specialist high-reach machines was used alongside demolition excavators to bring the building down safely.
As a client, we were nervous about this project due to its location and previous issues we’ve had with similar projects. Cawarden was outstanding throughout and completed the project without any issues or complaints.”

To maximize recycling, all waste materials were separated, with a 99% recycling rate achieved. The hard core was processed and crushed on-site to 6f2 specification.
Other activities included topographical and drainage surveys, capping works, and removing chlorine from underground tanks.
The floor slabs, foundations, and hardstandings were raised and regraded to prepare for future regeneration. The client requested a gently sloping finish to the site, achieved by layering the 6f2 crush material. We also completed landscaping works to the front of the site, including the creation of a new footpath.
Throughout the project, we worked closely with the client and stakeholders to ensure that it was completed smoothly and to the satisfaction of all parties.
