Cawarden delivers new car park as part of a regeneration project for Swadlincote town.
Cawarden, the main contractor, delivered the new car park project in Swadlincote as part of a regeneration project for the town. This project stands out as an excellent example of how a highly skilled contractor can ensure the fulfilment of all project requirements, offering an integrated service that exceeds the client’s expectations.
Demolition
We completed a 4-week programme to demolish and clear several abandoned/derelict buildings, creating space for a new 54-space public car park to serve the town centre and support local businesses.
Our first tasks involved setting up the site, installing Heras fencing to ensure its security, and completing the asbestos removal works. Our demolition team could then begin the process of demolishing the former Banks House. This also involved removing all slabs, foundations, and drainage.
After conducting remedial work on a mine shaft, we grouted it and completed essential landscaping to improve the site’s appearance.
Civils & Groundworks
On completion of Phase One, our Civils & Groundworks team then followed on to deliver the new three-tiered car park. Site preparation works included a detailed excavation to aid the archaeological team.
The success of the construction work depended on the installation of pre-cast, concrete, and brick retaining structures to form the split-level car park on a site with varying levels.
We then installed all the underground drainage and three attenuation tanks to hold the water runoff from the new scheme.
We designed and installed all new street lighting, CCTV, EV chargers, feeder pillars and car park signage. The EV charging points have played a crucial role in meeting the town’s sustainability goals and supporting the increasing number of electric vehicles on the roads.
The car park construction has been completed with over 2,000m2 of tarmac and a granite path that loops through the site and leads past a circular seating area. The addition of a new landscaped “pocket park” planted with over 200 native copper beech trees has created a wonderful urban green space for locals and visitors of the town to enjoy.
We provided our client with a robust and efficient integrated Demolition and Civils & Groundworks solution that mitigated risk, maximised investment value, and improved programme efficiency.
