Expert Demolition and Site Clearance of Sprawling 10-storey Apartment Block in Coventry.
The four-phase demolition and site clearance of the 144-home, 10-storey apartment block, Vincent Wyles House, showcased Cawarden’s expertise in efficient, environmentally conscious demolition practices.
Project Overview
Cawarden was appointed as the specialist sub-contractor to the project’s Principal Contractor, Wates, for the enabling and demolition works of the 144-home, 10-storey apartment block, Vincent Wyles House.
Enabling Works
Before the main demolition commenced, enabling works were carried out to ensure the project’s smooth execution. This included setting up the site and initiating a community engagement strategy, including newsletter distribution to inform residents of the project timeline and activities.
The establishment of perimeter environmental monitoring stations for noise, vibration, and dust control was also implemented.
Clean 6f2 material was imported to build a stable base pad at the South elevation for our specialist demolition machinery to work from.
Installation of full encapsulation scaffolding at the North elevation ensured safety and containment to protect a large residential block that remained live throughout the works.
Demolition Works
Methodology: Our in-house specialist high-reach machine tackled the four-phase demolition sequence of the superstructure.
Removal of slabs and foundations, followed the demolition sequence by backfilling of voids with site-won material.
Excavators assisted in material sorting and loading for off-site recycling, achieving a 99% recycling rate.
Protective Measures
Safety Measures: Demolition exclusion zones (red, amber, and green) were established to ensure that both personnel and the public were kept safe at all times.
Demolition Debris: Deployment of large shipping containers along the East elevation shielded the adjacent road from debris.
Noise, Dust and Vibration Monitoring/Mitigation: Use of boom-mounted and ground-level dust suppression systems minimised airborne particles. Continuous monitoring was carried out to minimise disruption to local residents and ensure the project was completed in a considerate manner.
Traffic Control: To ensure safety during the final phase of demolition, a temporary single-lane closure was implemented on the adjacent road. Close coordination with the client and local highway authorities allowed us to develop an effective traffic management strategy. Utilising advanced 3D modelling helped us to develop and agree on the method statement and demolition design, ensuring a well-planned and efficient execution.
Expertise Delivered
This project was crucial in supporting our client with the regeneration of the site. The demolition of the disused apartment blocks was completed on time, safely, and with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
The site was left clean and clear ready for the next phase of development which will see the construction of new homes brought to the area.
This project underscores Cawarden’s capability as a leader in the demolition industry, emphasising our commitment to safety, sustainability, and community collaboration.
